Bloodletting and Social Circles

What is devil’s pitch? Who needed arsenic? And what was taxed as a luxury?

Step into the past at the Qwensel House, the oldest wooden building in central Turku. Today, the house features an elegant bourgeois home decorated in late 18th–early 19th-century style and a unique, self-sufficient 19th-century pharmacy complex.

During the guided tour, you’ll hear fascinating stories about the building’s colourful history. In the bourgeois home, you’ll get to know the family of the house’s most famous resident – Professor Joseph Pipping, later ennobled as Pippingsköld – and discover what life was like in their era.

In the Pharmacy Museum, the world of past apothecaries comes to life: traditional working methods, old medicines, and the education of pharmacists are all explored.

The temporary exhibition is included in the tour, which can be tailored to your interests – for example, focusing on either the home or the pharmacy.

  • Duration: about 1 hour
  • Price: €80 per group (on public holidays €110 per group). Museum admission per person is added to the price.
  • Group size: up to 20 people
